Sanitary sewer line flushing will begin next week in select residential areas for Utility and Waste Management Services (UWMS) customers. This maintenance clears fats, oils, grease, and other debris that may have accumulated in the system, helping to prevent sewage backups into homes. Additionally, this process allows UWMS staff to inspect the sewer lines with CCTV. This will identify any issues that could impact the collection system.
What this means to you
Residents will see hydro vac trucks, flushing trucks and CCTV inspection vehicles on the street in areas where flushing is underway. please give these large vehicles room to work and stay 15 metres away for the crews to work safely.
How to prepare for sanitary flushing
Each home should have a backwater valve installed to prevent water coming up any gravity service line and into the house.
Other preparation tips include:
- Closing toilet lids to prevent air bubble & splashing from toilets during flushing,
- Placing towel around any basement floor drains to contain and prevent water from splashing onto floors.
What is the timeline for my neighbourhood?
