ICF Committee Identifies Potential Joint Advocacy Opportunities

Joint Statement: Morinville, AB – On May 6, 2019, Sturgeon County and the Town of Morinville held an Intermunicipal Affairs Committee (IAC) meeting to share information with their respective Council members.
The committee discussed matters of mutual interest and collaboration. Topics included identifying potential joint advocacy opportunities, receiving an update on the Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework (ICF) by the ICF Committee, opportunities outside the ICF discussion, increasing awareness about shared efforts related to solid waste delivery, and community updates.
“It’s important that we keep our respective Councils informed of the progress the committee is making, and gather their input regarding shared opportunities,” said Town of Morinville Mayor Barry Turner.
“We value the relationship with the Town of Morinville and the structured framework the IAC provides us for regular discussions,” said Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw.
The Town of Morinville is represented by Mayor Barry Turner and Councillors Nicole Boutestein and Stephen Dafoe. Sturgeon County is represented by Mayor Alanna Hnatiw and Councillor Karen Shaw and Deputy Mayor Patrick D. Tighe.
Under the Modernized Municipal Government Act, municipalities with common boundaries, must, within two years create a framework that:
- Provides for the integrated and strategic planning, delivery and funding of intermunicipal services,such as water and waste water, solid waste, transportation, recreation and emergency services.
- Stewards scarce resources efficiently in providing local services, and
- Ensures municipalities contribute funding to services that benefit their residents.
