Sturgeon County is best known for its agricultural sector, where farms in the area have traditionally produced grains and oilseeds for mass market and seasonal produce for sale at local farmers’ markets. Mixed farm operations also produce cattle, bison, elk, and poultry for regional consumption. More recently, Sturgeon County has seen the addition of more diverse business interests, including home-based businesses and small to medium industrial activity ranging from value-added agriculture to transportation/logistics and oil and gas servicing.
The County is also home to a portion of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland with companies like Agrium, Northwest Upgrading, Provident Energy/Williams, Access Pipeline, Bunge Canada and Canadian Biofuels included in the list of major employers in the heavy industrial sector. Thanks to an abundance of natural resources, Sturgeon County also supplies about 90% of the concrete aggregate demand for the Greater Edmonton region. Significant gravel deposits located in the western portion of the County, near Villeneuve have attracted several large-scale aggregate companies to the area.
The military also has a strong presence within Sturgeon County. Of the approximately 5,000 troops stationed at CFB Edmonton, roughly half live within the neighbourhoods and communities of Sturgeon County.
